Whitchurch Whippets’ popular Annual Relay, to be held next week on Thursday 13th July – 7.30pm at Alderford Lake, has attracted over 120 teams and, as last year, sold out well ahead of the event taking place.

Sponsored by Grocontinental, this is the sixth year the relay has been staged.  Its success has been attributed to the inclusion of runners of all abilities, ranging from established club runners to families, groups of friends and colleagues from local businesses. The relay involves three legs of two miles around Alderford Lake with specific prizes for the community teams finishing with the best times.

The off-road relay has become an established fixture in the town’s calendar of events.  The number of teams entering has grown from 39 in 2012 to this year’s 120 teams.

“Whether you’re a participant or a spectator, the relay is a great event to support and Alderford Lake provides the perfect backdrop on a summer’s evening,” said Grocontinental’s Managing Director, Linda Grocott. “The community spirit of the event, with those new to running participating in the same event as some of Shropshire’s best athletes, has proved to be a real winner.  The relay is very well organised by Whitchurch Whippets and there is always a great atmosphere on the night.

“Over the last six years, the event has proved to be a launch pad to get local people into running.”

Louis Richards, Emma Hocknell and Oliver Saywell of Grocontinental, who are taking part in this year’s relay, handed over the company’s sponsorship cheque to John Dillon, Chairman, and Cathy McAllister of Whitchurch Whippets.

Spectators are welcome.  There is free parking and the Alderford Lake café will be open for food and drinks on the evening.

Further details of the event are on the Whitchurch Whippets’ website at www.whitchurchwhippets.co.uk  The club runs specific programmes for people who have never tried running before but who want to give it a try.  Anyone interested and wanting to find out more should contact John Dillon on 01948 710316.
